How it works
How many mods of a side stay
| Stay \ In pool | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 41% | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1 | 59% | 67% | 39% | 11% | 0 | 0 |
| 2 | 0 | 33% | 52% | 59% | 43% | 28% |
| 3 | 0 | 0 | 10% | 31% | 57% | 72% |
A column is how many mods of this side both items bring together, a row how many of them stay. This is a community estimate, not GGG data.

Every rule and where it comes from. Where there is no source or sources disagree, it says so.
The result takes one of the two bases, 50/50. Everything tied to that base comes with it.

A fractured mod on its own base always stays: if the result takes its base, the mod is on the result, still fractured, in a place on its side.

A fractured mod does not stay on the other base: it cannot transfer, but it counts towards the pool, as an NNN mod does.
modelled
A mod that cannot roll on the chosen base (NNN) counts towards the pool but does not stay: another is taken instead. Whether it rolls comes from the base's pool.

Influence comes from the base. Influence mods do not transfer to a base without it: they are NNN.

Implicits come from the base, including those of synthesis and influence.
modelled
The result's item level: the average of the two plus 2, rounded down, but not above the higher one. For example, 83 + 82 give 83.

Only one exclusive mod can stay: once one is chosen, the others on both sides are thrown out. These are essence-only mods, beast aspects, Breach, Incursion, meta crafts, Elevated and Delve mods.

Veiled mods and unveiled crafts (Chosen, of the Order) are exclusive. A pasted mod missing from the base's pool is counted as exclusive too: it is most often one of these.
modelled
Only one crafted mod can stay on the result: once one is chosen, the other crafts on both sides are thrown out.

Meta crafts are exclusive. The bench data has five: Prefixes Cannot Be Changed, Suffixes Cannot Be Changed, Can have up to 3 Crafted Modifiers, Cannot roll Attack Modifiers, Cannot roll Caster Modifiers.
modelled
A plain bench craft and another exclusive mod: whether both can stay was not checked in the game. aoeah 3.29 counts any craft as exclusive. Maxroll's list names only meta and unveiled crafts, though its example counts crafts as exclusive. On the forum a player saw a craft push out an exclusive mod. The model goes with aoeah, one of them stays, and the page warns about it.

Corrupted and mirrored items cannot go into the Recombinator: pasting one gives a message and no numbers. A split item can, and it counts as a regular one.

Synthesised: the implicit comes from the base (above). Whether the tag itself and the word Synthesised in the name carry over, there is no source.
unknown
Which mods exactly stay for a given count. GGG in 3.25.1: rarer mods are now chosen much more often; no weights. The model takes every allowed mod as equally likely: this is the page's main inaccuracy.
unknown
Many mods that cannot roll on the base (Veiled, essences): since 3.26.0 the result has fewer mods on average. GGG did not say how many fewer, and the community table is older. The page warns about it and does not change the numbers.
unknown
A random extra mod on the result and a tier shift. PoEDB: a new mod may be added, the chance depends on many factors. The wiki: since 3.26 tiers shift only after upgrading the Recombinator in Kingsmarch. No chances are known, so this is not modelled.
unknown
A mod with a level above the result's item level: whether it stays, there is no source. The model takes it that it stays.
unknown
One prefix and one suffix in the pool, no NNN: both, only the prefix or only the suffix come out, 1/3 each.
modelled
The 1p1e + 1e1s recipe: Esm has 1p1s at no less than 1/3, with exact odds depending on weights. It goes by the general rules, with a note.
unknown
Two non-unique items of one class go in, and the result is rare. The class boundary (sceptre and mace) was not checked, so in a doubtful case there are no numbers.
modelled
Imprints, Crucible trees, foreseeing and intangibility are lost, and the defence percentile is random. The card does not show them.

What the Recombinator calculator computes
The Recombinator in Path of Exile stands in Kingsmarch and can be placed in your hideout as a bench. It merges two items into one and both originals are consumed. There are two modes: in Predictable you pick the mods and the game shows the chance, and in Unpredictable an item always comes out, with random mods. This calculator is about Unpredictable: how many prefixes and suffixes stay on the result and how likely each mod is to stay.
Paste two items from the game, or pick bases and add mods by searching their text. With two different bases the page shows both 50/50 outcomes, each with its own pool, mod counts, mod chances and conflicts, and the overall chance of the starred mods is their average. The prefixes of both items form one pool and the suffixes another, and the size of a pool decides how many mods of that side stay. A button rolls one recombination and shows the result as a card, and every roll with its mods stays in a list under the items. Warnings name the cases where a mod does not stay: one group, a second exclusive mod, NNN and a fractured mod on the other base.
The mod counts come from a community table: an estimate, not GGG data. Mod chances assume every mod is equally likely, although in patch 3.25.1 GGG wrote that rarer mods are chosen much more often, without giving weights. So use the result to compare recipes, not as an exact probability.

How the Recombinator works
- The Recombinator stands in Kingsmarch and can be placed in your hideout as a bench. It costs Gold and Thaumaturgic Dust. Both items are consumed and one comes out.
- There are two modes. In Predictable you pick the mods and the game shows the chance; on a failure both items are lost. In Unpredictable an item always comes out with random mods. This Tool is about Unpredictable.
- The result takes one of the two bases, 50/50. The prefixes of both items form one pool and the suffixes another. How many mods of a side stay depends on the size of its pool (table above).
- Of the mods of one group (say two life mods) at most one stays, though both count towards the pool size.
- Only one exclusive mod can stay: once one is chosen, the other exclusive mods on both sides are thrown out. These are essence-only mods, beast aspects, Breach and Incursion mods and meta crafts.
- Only one crafted mod can stay on the result too.
- An NNN (natural non-native) mod is a regular mod that cannot roll on the result's base. It counts towards the pool size but never stays: another mod is taken instead.
- Which mods stay is unknown. In 3.25.1 GGG wrote that rarer mods are now much more likely to be chosen, without giving weights.
- In the game, hover the item and press Ctrl+C, or better Ctrl+Alt+C: the text then names prefixes, suffixes and tiers. Then Ctrl+V in a slot. Or pick a base and add mods by hand. The text is read only in your browser and goes nowhere; the link holds only the recipe.
- Pasting has not been checked on real items from the game yet: the format comes from Path of Building and Awakened PoE Trade. Check the mods on the card and correct them by hand.
